As Africa marks the International Day of the African Child on June 16, the spotlight once again falls on the importance of ensuring that every child has access to quality education, healthcare, protection and opportunities to thrive.

In Anambra State, a number of initiatives introduced by the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo are aimed at improving the lives of children through investments in education, healthcare and social development.

A major milestone has been the introduction of free education in public primary and secondary schools, seeking to eliminate financial barriers that keep children out of the classroom, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in life.

To complement this effort, the state government embarked on the recruitment of thousands of teachers across the 21 Local Government Areas(LGA), strengthening the education sector by addressing staffing gaps and enhancing the quality of teaching in public schools.

Anambra is also embracing technology-driven learning through the establishment of smart schools and the integration of digital tools into classroom instruction, designing to equip pupils with the technological skills required in an increasingly digital world and prepare them for future opportunities.

Beyond education, the government has intensified efforts to promote child welfare and protection, aiming at combating child labour, abuse, neglect and exploitation have been reinforced through public awareness campaigns and the implementation of child protection measures.

The health and wellbeing of children have also received considerable attention. Investments in primary healthcare facilities, routine immunisation programmes, maternal and child health services and emergency medical response systems are helping to improve access to essential healthcare, reducing preventable illnesses among children.

The administration has equally championed inclusive development by promoting equal opportunities for all children, including those living with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, reflecting  the broader goal of ensuring that every child, regardless of circumstance, can reach their full potential.

As the International Day of the African Child is observed, Anambra’s efforts in education, healthcare, and child protection underscore the vital role of government in creating an environment where children can grow, learn and flourish.

The occasion also offers an opportunity to celebrate progress while renewing the commitment to addressing existing challenges, ensuring that every child in Anambra enjoys the rights, support, and opportunities needed to become a productive and responsible member of society.
