The International Day of Charity is observed annually on Sept. 5 to promote compassion, solidarity and collective action in support of vulnerable people and communities.
The day highlights the contributions of charitable organisations, volunteers, civil society groups and individuals in addressing poverty, hunger, inequality and humanitarian challenges while promoting human dignity.
Charitable initiatives remain an important part of community development, particularly during conflicts, natural disasters, economic hardship and public health emergencies.
Through donations, volunteerism, food distribution, educational support and other forms of humanitarian assistance, charitable organisations and individuals help vulnerable people access basic necessities and opportunities.
Charity, however, extends beyond financial donations. Individuals can contribute their time, skills and resources by volunteering, mentoring young people, supporting community initiatives, donating essential items and assisting people facing difficult circumstances.
In Nigeria, charitable organisations and community based groups continue to complement government and other institutional efforts to address social and economic challenges.
Their interventions include providing educational materials and healthcare support, as well as assisting displaced persons, low income families and communities affected by emergencies.
The International Day of Charity was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 and is observed on Sept. 5, the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, who was widely recognised for her humanitarian work.
The day provides an opportunity for governments, organisations, businesses and individuals to strengthen partnerships and promote sustainable forms of giving that uphold human dignity and deliver lasting benefits to communities.
Beyond celebrating generosity, the day serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to build communities where vulnerable people are supported and given greater opportunities to live dignified and productive lives.
