Residents and traders in Nkpor has complied with the monthly environmental sanitation exercise ahead of the state government’s directive on the desilting of drainages.
Officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, were on ground to monitor compliance in markets, residential areas, and along major roads, and to evacuate refuse packed out during the exercise. ASWAMA commended the high turnout of residents, noting that many proactively desilted drainages in anticipation of the rainy season.
The Chairman, Landlord Association of Nkpor, Mr. Ephraim Ikwunne, explained that the level of compliance reflects public support for Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s environmental policies. He added that the directive on desilting drainages is aimed at preventing flooding, especially in flood-prone areas of Nkpor.
Some landlords around Nkpor Junction and Umusiome were seen mobilizing tenants to clear waterways beside their compounds. Traders at Nkpor Main Market also participated, removing refuse from gutters to ensure the free flow of water during rainfall.
ASWAMA reiterated that the 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. sanitation window remains compulsory and warned that defaulters are still liable to approved fines.
