‎The rising cost of living and reduced purchasing power have pushed residents to increasingly patronize low-cost goods as households adjust to current economic realities. Many consumers say inflation and the recent increase in fuel prices have forced them to lower their standards and opt for more affordable items to meet daily needs.
‎
‎At the Grain Seed Market near Army Barracks, Onitsha, buyers were seen flocking to traders who offer goods at cheaper rates.
‎
‎In an interview, Miss Margaret Ekeh, stated, financial constraints have made designer slippers, quality clothing, and other expensive items unaffordable. “I now prefer to buy cheaper alternatives gradually as my income permits,” she stated.
‎
‎Mr. Emeka Ezemba reacted, price has become the primary factor in his purchasing decisions. “As long as an item serves its purpose, that is what matters. If clothing fits well or food is safe for consumption, then it is worth buying,” he said.
‎
‎While Mrs. Chinyere Iloh noted that she now chooses cheaper food options without compromising utility. “Whenever I want to buy fresh tomatoes, I go for the cheaper ‘awarawa’ variety because both expensive and cheaper tomatoes serve the same purpose after grinding. The stomach does not ask what it eats,” she explained.
‎
‎Miss Princess Unegbe said she regularly buys footwear from wheelbarrow vendors due to their lower prices. According to her, such sellers do not pay shop rent and can afford to sell with minimal profit margins.
