The First Niger Bridge has reopened to motorists following rehabilitation by the Federal Government, with new safety installations introduced to protect the infrastructure and improve traffic management.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this while outlining measures taken to enhance the bridge’s condition, safeguard motorists and ensure the continued use of the strategic transport link.

The rehabilitation included resurfacing, installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras, as well as construction of turnaround points to assist motorists whose vehicles develop faults.

Umahi explained that a median barrier had also been installed to encourage traffic discipline and discourage dangerous driving, while observation centres are being established at both ends for security monitoring.

The minister, however, expressed concern over the removal of bolts and cutting of steel components on the bridge, warning that such acts could compromise its structural integrity and endanger road users.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to maintaining critical national infrastructure and implementing measures to guarantee safer movement for motorists across the country.

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the rehabilitation, describing the bridge as a vital national asset.

Similarly, Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, appreciated the President and the Minister of Works for the intervention, which he said demonstrated federal attention to infrastructure development in the Southeast.

The reopening is expected to facilitate movement of commuters, traders and businesses between Anambra and Delta States, reinforcing the bridge’s importance to regional connectivity and the national economy.
