As the rainy season sets in across various parts of Nigeria, agricultural experts and farmers have emphasized the need for the effective utilization of farm inputs to enhance food production and increase harvests.
Agricultural expert, Mrs. Ifeoma Onyema, stated that inputs such as improved seedlings, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and farming tools are critical to promoting healthy crop growth during the rainy season.
During an engagement with farmers in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, the farmers described farm inputs as essential resources that help minimize losses and improve agricultural productivity.
Mrs. Helen Nwoye, a cassava farmer, noted that the use of improved seedlings and fertilizers had significantly benefited her farm. “With good seeds and fertilizers during the rainy season, crops grow healthier and faster. This also leads to higher yields and increased income,” she said.

Similarly, Mr. Chukwudi Ezeani, a farmer, explained that herbicides are vital for controlling weeds, which tend to grow rapidly during the rainy season. “Without herbicides, weeds can overrun farms due to accelerated growth caused by rainfall. Farm inputs help farmers save both time and labor,” he observed.
Mr. Emmanuel Obi, an agricultural extension worker, stressed that the proper application of pesticides protects crops from pests and diseases commonly associated with the wet season. He added that the availability of rainfall during this period provides a favorable condition for farming, making it imperative for farmers to complement it with quality inputs for optimal results.
He outlined the key benefits of farm inputs during the rainy season to include increased crop yield, healthy plant growth, effective weed and pest control, improved produce quality, reduced crop losses, and enhanced food supply and farmers’ income.
The farmers also used the opportunity to appeal to government and agricultural agencies to make farm inputs more affordable and accessible, particularly for those in rural areas. They expressed confidence that with adequate support and favorable weather conditions, the current farming season would yield improved food production and help alleviate hardship across the country.
