Christian faithful gathered at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Enekwasumpu, on August 4, 2026, for a Vigil Mass in honour of Rev. Msgr. Basil Onwuasomba, who passed away on June 10, 2026.
The solemn service brought together parishioners, family members, friends and well wishers to celebrate the late priest’s life of unwavering faith, dedicated service and commitment to God’s work.
Delivering the homily, the Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Jideofor, challenged the congregation to reflect on the legacy they would leave behind, asking, “What will people remember us for?”
He urged christians to cultivate meaningful relationships with God and with one another, stressing that a life rooted in faith, integrity and love remains the greatest legacy anyone can leave.
Fr. Jideofor described the late monsignor as a devoted priest who loved his vocation wholeheartedly and maintained a close relationship with God throughout his life.
According to him, Msgr. Onwuasomba was fearless, principled and unwavering in defending what was right, recalling his remarkable sense of gratitude and discipline, noting that the late cleric appreciated both God and those around him while paying attention even to personal neatness as a reflection of self-respect and order.
The faithful prayed for the peaceful repose of the late monsignor’s soul and asked God to raise more priests who would emulate his exemplary virtues of humility, gratitude, dedication and faithful service to humanity.
The vigil concluded with prayers for the bereaved family, the parish community and the Church, as worshippers reflected on the enduring impact of the late priest’s life and ministry.
