The rainy season may bring cooler temperatures and relief from the heat, but it also presents significant challenges for motorists. Wet road surfaces, poor visibility, flooded routes, and slippery conditions increase the risk of road traffic crashes, making vehicle safety more important than ever.
A roadworthy vehicle is not only a legal requirement but also a critical safeguard for drivers, passengers, and other road users. Many accidents that occur during the rainy season can be avoided through regular vehicle maintenance and routine safety checks.
Motorists should ensure that their brakes are in good working condition, tyres have adequate tread depth and the correct air pressure, headlights and brake lights are functioning properly, and windscreen wipers are effective. These simple but essential measures improve visibility, enhance vehicle stability, and enable drivers to respond promptly to emergencies.
The Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) Department of the Anambra State Ministry of Transport urges all motorists to thoroughly inspect their vehicles before embarking on any journey, particularly during the rainy season. A well-maintained vehicle is better equipped to withstand the demands of adverse weather and challenging road conditions.
Beyond vehicle maintenance, responsible driving remains essential. Drivers should reduce speed on wet roads, maintain a safe following distance, avoid dangerous overtaking, obey traffic regulations, and exercise patience at all times. These precautions significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes and help protect lives.
Road safety is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of every road user. By ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy and adopting safe driving habits, motorists can contribute to safer roads for everyone.
As the rains continue, let safety remain the priority. Arriving alive is far more important than arriving in haste. Safe roads begin with roadworthy vehicles, responsible drivers, and a shared commitment to protecting lives.
