The Vicar of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Akpo, Rev. Fr. Innocent Chinazaekpere Uwakwe, has described leadership as a sacred vocation rather than a platform for self-aggrandizement, emphasizing that it is a divine call to serve both God and humanity.

He made this known in a homily delivered during a special Mass to commemorate Good Shepherd Sunday, held at Agbelu Village Hall, Akpo, in Aguata Local Government Area on April 26.

Speaking on the theme of servant leadership, the cleric stressed that true leadership prioritizes the welfare of the people over personal gain. According to him, leadership should not be driven by self-enrichment, pride, or a sense of superiority.

Drawing inspiration from the example of Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd, he noted that genuine leaders must be willing to make sacrifices for those they lead.

“Leadership is about the well-being of the people. If you are not ready to inconvenience yourself for the comfort of others, then, you should step aside,” he said.

Rev. Fr. Uwakwe decried the attitude of some public office holders who assume leadership positions but fail to address critical societal challenges such as poor healthcare, inadequate electricity supply, and deteriorating educational infrastructure. He criticized leaders who, despite encountering these issues upon assumption of office, leave without making meaningful improvements.

He further condemned the disconnect between leaders and the people, noting that many seek medical treatment abroad, fund foreign education for their children, and enjoy stable power supply through private means, while the general populace suffers prolonged power outages and poor living conditions.

The cleric prayed for a transformation of heart among leaders, urging them to act in the best interest of the people they serve.

Addressing families, he reminded parents and guardians that leadership begins at home and should be reflected through exemplary conduct.

“You cannot claim to be a good leader while engaging in negative behaviors before your children. They learn more from what you do than what you say,” he cautioned.

He also spoke against domestic violence, describing it as a failure of leadership within the family unit. While calling for mutual respect and responsibility, he emphasized the need for attitudinal change among all members of society to build stronger homes and, ultimately, a better society.
