The Catholic Church and the wider community on Sunday, December 28, 2025, came together to celebrate the 80th birthday of Enyi Lady Joyce Ngozi Egbuniwe, a respected matriarch, church leader, and community icon, at a solemn and colourful ceremony in Onitsha.
The celebration commenced with a Holy Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Inland Town, Onitsha, presided over by the Chief Celebrant, Rev. Fr. Charles Anene.
Rev. Fr. Valentine Egbejiogu, Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Parish (ICP), Woliwo, and Rev. Fr. Hyginus Nwandu, who also delivered the homily as well as 12 other priests were in attendance, adding solemnity and prestige to the Eucharistic celebration.

Earlier in his homily, captioned “What Is in a Name?”, Rev. Fr. Nwandu offered a profound psychological and spiritual exposition of the celebrant’s names-Joyce, Ngozi, and Nwamunamna, describing them as rich and positive affirmations of God’s goodness manifested in her life.
He commended Enyi Lady Egbuniwe for her selfless contributions to the service of God and humanity, noting that her life embodies the virtues her names proclaim.
Enyi Lady Egbuniwe, with the prestigious title “Nwamunamna,” is widely regarded as an administrator par excellence, a distinguished member of the Otu ODU Society, a devoted member of the Knights of St. John Ladies Auxiliary, and a leader of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), among several other religious and social associations.
In his remarks, the Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Inland Town, Onitsha, Rev. Fr. Francis Mary Udeaja, extolled the sterling qualities of Lady Egbuniwe, describing her life as worthy of emulation. He further referred to her as “stainless” in character and service, praying God to grant her many more fruitful years on earth.
On behalf of His Holiness, Pope Leo IV, Rev. Fr. Udeaja formally presented Papal blessings and a letter of recognition to the celebrant, acknowledging her unwavering dedication and tireless service to the Church; a rare honour that attracted warm applause from the congregation.
Following the church service, the celebration moved to a reception at St. Mulumba Hall, where family members, friends, and well-wishers were entertained with sumptuous dishes in an atmosphere of joy and gratitude.
The celebrant’s daughter, who travelled from abroad, paid glowing tribute to her mother’s leadership qualities, resilience, and numerous achievements, while expressing heartfelt appreciation to all who gathered to honour her.
The granddaughters of the celebrant also took turns to eulogise their grandmother, each highlighting her virtues of love, discipline, faith, and generosity—moments that deeply touched the audience.
Some guests present were visibly happy to speak on Lady Egbuniwe positive impact in their lives.
Highlights of the occasion included the cutting of the birthday cake by the celebrant, flanked by her daughter, grand daughters, friends, and well-wishers; presentation of gifts; and a graceful dance by the celebrant, which added colour and excitement to the celebration.
