Catholics across the world commemorated Ascension Thursday, marking the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven forty days after His Resurrection-rephrase to be in a more formal way
At St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Enekwaspum, Rev. Fr. Vincent Ezeaka stated in his homily that the feast celebrates the completion of Christ’s earthly ministry and His entry into heavenly glory at the right hand of God the Father. He cited Acts 1:9-11, Mark 16:19, and Luke 24:50-53 as the scriptural basis for the solemnity.
Fr. Ezeaka explained that for Catholics, the Ascension affirms the hope of eternal life and serves as a reminder that heaven is the ultimate destination of believers. He noted that while Christ ascended bodily, He continues to be present in the Church through the Eucharist, the sacraments, Sacred Scripture, and the fellowship of the faithful.
He further stated that prior to His ascension, Christ commissioned His disciples to proclaim the Gospel, thereby making the feast a summons to active evangelisation and holy living.
The priest stressed that the significance of the feast lies in its message of hope, love, selflessness, and charity, particularly in times of adversity. He urged Christians to transcend sin, corruption, and materialism, and to live in anticipation of Christ’s return by advancing His mission on earth.
He charged the faithful to embody unconditional love, forgiveness, and charity in their daily lives.
