Catholics observe the October devotion through prayers and the recitation of the Holy Rosary, a longstanding spiritual practice that promotes faith, devotion and reflection on the life of Jesus Christ through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The devotion, traditionally observed throughout October, features the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Eucharistic Benediction, usually led by a priest with active participation from the congregation.
The prayer sessions may conclude with other Catholic prayers, including the Angelus and the Anima Christi, depending on the parish’s established practice.
The Church encourages Catholics to pray the Rosary daily, individually, with their families at home or during communal gatherings in their parishes.
The devotion gained wider recognition following the efforts of Pope Leo XIII, who, in an encyclical dated September 1, 1883, encouraged devotion to the Holy Rosary and promoted its recitation during October.
Pope Leo XIII played a significant role in strengthening the October Rosary devotion, encouraging Catholics to seek spiritual renewal and divine assistance through prayer and meditation.
The Rosary is regarded by Catholics as a powerful spiritual practice that strengthens faith, encourages virtuous living and offers an opportunity to seek God’s protection against evil.
During the October devotion, Catholics also offer prayers seeking the intercession of St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, reflecting on his virtues of humility, obedience and faithfulness to God.
The October devotion therefore provides an opportunity for Catholics to deepen their spiritual lives, strengthen family prayer and renew their commitment to Christian values through the Holy Rosary.
