The Catholic Church worldwide observed the Solemnity of the Ascension on Thursday, May 14, 2026, a Holy Day of Obligation celebrated 40 days after Easter to commemorate the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
Delivering a sermon during Mass at St. Paulinus Chaplaincy, Udoka Housing Estate, Awka, Rev. Fr. Vitus Udodimma Onyekaba of Tansi International College stated that Christ had fulfilled His earthly mission through His death and resurrection and was now seated at the right hand of God.
Fr. Onyekaba emphasized that it now falls to Christians to fulfill their own part by engaging in God’s work and leading lives of righteousness. “Christ has completed His mission through His death and resurrection. It is now our responsibility to do our part so that we may behold God face to face. There remains much work to be done, and we must strive diligently”.
He urged Catholic faithfuls to remain steadfast in hope, noting that Christ’s repeated appearances after the Resurrection affirmed the reality of His rising. “We must invite the Holy Spirit into our lives to guide us in carrying out God’s work, so that we may attain eternal communion with Him in heaven,” he added.
Speaking after the Mass, the Vice Chairman of the Chaplaincy Council, Mr. Chinemelum Ebele, described the Ascension as a pivotal feast in the Church noting that Christ’s ascension made possible the coming of the Holy Spirit.
In their contributions, Mrs. Lizzy Ezenweke, the Catechist, stated that the Ascension is the foundation of Christian hope, as it is only through Christ’s ascension and the sending of the Holy Spirit that believers are empowered for mission. Lady Chiege Franca added that the Advocate corresponds to the human conscience, noting that obedience to one’s conscience reflects obedience to the Holy Spirit, which is maintained through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
