The Catholic Church has commenced its annual May devotion in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Umuoji, joining parishes worldwide in the month-long spiritual observance.
The devotion, which began on Friday, May 1, 2026, features the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary and special Masses. It will culminate on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with the celebration of the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Across the Church, parishes, chaplaincies, and lay apostolate groups including the Legion of Mary and Block Rosary Centres are leading the faithful in prayer and Marian devotions.
At Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, the Holy Rosary is recited daily before evening Mass. The parish has scheduled several activities, including May altar decorations adorned with flowers, street Rosary processions, Marian catechesis, novenas, and charitable outreach.
Many Catholic families are utilizing the period to deepen their spiritual lives, seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for personal intentions, their families, and the nation. Congregations continue to gather at church premises, Marian grottos, and neighbourhood Rosary centres, with evenings marked by hymns and prayers.
In his address at the opening of the programme, Rev. Fr. Remigius Ezinne urged parishioners to participate actively in the devotion. He further advised the faithful to rely on verified parish communication channels for updates on the schedule of activities.
Speaking on the observance, Bro. Longinus, leader of the parish’s Legion of Mary, described May as a sacred period for Marian devotion. He noted that members are undertaking consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with a novena held each morning after Mass at the grotto.
