The Catholic Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese, Cardinal Peter Ebere Okpaleke, has urged people, particularly older adults, to engage in regular physical exercise to maintain good health.

Okpaleke made the call on Oct. 11, in a homily during a Mass marking the 100th birthday of Mrs Virginia Okwuputa Ezema, mother of Rev. Fr. Alex Ezema, at Amaife Village, Akpo, Aguata Local Government Area.

Speaking through the Vicar-General of the diocese, Rev. Fr. Anthony Chiegboka, the bishop cited the celebrant as an example of active ageing, noting that she still walks to Oye Uga and other markets for her trading activities.

He said walking to markets, farms and other destinations could help people remain physically active, adding that access to vehicles should not discourage individuals from walking when practicable.

The bishop also commended Ezema for raising her children in the Christian faith, noting that three of her five sons were Knights of the Catholic faith, while one was a Catholic priest.

He urged parents to instil sound moral and religious values in their children, saying responsible upbringing could contribute to fulfilment in old age.

The celebration was attended by the celebrant’s six children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, Catholic priests, religious sisters, friends and relatives, including members of her maternal community in Amesi.

The celebrant danced and cut her birthday cake during the event.
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Alex Ezema, Parish Priest of St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Igboukwu, thanked the attendees and prayed for their safe return home.

He also prayed for God’s blessings on those who honoured his mother on the occasion.
