The Brothers of St. Stephen on Aug. 16 renewed their commitment to religious life during a retreat with their Founder, His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze, at St. Francis Xavier Fraternity, Nkwelle-Ezunaka.
The retreat marked the conclusion of the congregation’s annual retreat and provided the brothers with an opportunity for prayer, reflection and personal dialogue with their founder.
The programme began with Holy Mass celebrated by the retreat moderator, Rev. Fr. Augustine Oni, alongside Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ndubuisi and Rev. Fr. Cosmas Otteh.
In his homily, Cardinal Arinze emphasised the importance of perseverance in religious vocation, reminding the brothers that a lasting vocation requires more than initial enthusiasm. He said fidelity, patience and steadfast commitment to God are essential, particularly during challenging moments.
The cardinal encouraged the brothers not to allow trials, disappointments or weariness to weaken their resolve, urging them to remain faithful to the purpose for which they consecrated their lives to God.
He noted that true perseverance is demonstrated by continuing to serve God sincerely even after the initial excitement of religious life has faded, through the different seasons and challenges of the vocation.
The highlight of the retreat was the renewal of vows by the temporarily professed brothers, who reaffirmed their commitment to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience and their desire to follow Christ faithfully within the congregation.
The brothers engaged Cardinal Arinze in a dialogue on various aspects of religious life and vocation, sharing concerns and seeking guidance from their founder.
The congregation prayed for God’s continued protection, strength and good health for Cardinal Arinze, as well as grace for every brother to remain faithful to his vocation with courage, humility and perseverance.
