BREAKING THE JINX: SIR CHIKE ODUMODU PIONEERS OZO TITLE IN ENUOJI VILLAGE

By Regina Igwebuike

Ozo (Sir) Engr. Chike Odumodu makes history as Enuoji Village’s first Ozo titleholder in over a century, breaking a long-standing tradition. His initiation into Ozo Amawbia society marks a new era for Enuoji, paving the way for others to follow.

The initiation ceremony at Ozo Odumodu’s residence on March 19, brought together esteemed guests, including Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Afunugo (Ozomma) Isiozo Umunachi, showcasing the respect and admiration for the new Ozo titleholder. The event was a convergence of personalities from various walks of life, celebrating this milestone.

Ozo Odumodu expressed joy at being the first from Enuoji Village to take the title. “I’m so happy Enuoji has gotten its share in Amawbia,” he said. With his initiation, Enuoji now participates fully in Amawbia functions, and others from the village can take the title.

Odumodu is also the second in his age group to take the Ozo title. He lamented that Enuoji was previously excluded from some events due to lack of Ozo title holders.

He explained that Ozo title is a prestigious honor in Igbo culture, symbolizing leadership and respect. In Amawbia, it signifies a person’s commitment to community service and tradition. Ozo titleholders often play key roles in cultural and social events, promoting unity and community development.

One of his invitees, Rev. Fr. Prof. Afunugo, gave clarification on Ozo Title and Christian Faith. Sharing insights on the Ozo title, he explained that while it was once associated with fetish practices before 1965, the Catholic Church investigated and allowed Christians to take the title without worshipping deities.

After Vatican II Council, Archbishop Arinze formed a committee to study the issue. Communities like Dunukofia and Amawbia agreed to take the Ozo Uka title without worshipping deities, while Onitsha town disagreed. Some individuals may still secretly worship deities, but Christians who take the title with faith aren’t involved in these practices.

Nze Dr Godwin Onyibo Okeke, a proud father figure, witnessed his mentee Chike Odumodu’s Ozo title taking. “He’s like a son to me. I taught him, and he’s very appreciative.”

Okeke noted that Ozo title embodies Truth and Justice. He emphasized the positive impact of Ozo titleholders: “They stand for truth, justice, and everything good.” He encouraged others to get involved, saying it can help reduce societal atrocities.

Hon. Sir Joseph Igwebuike, Chairman Okpaligwe Coronation Committee and the immediate past President of Laity Council, Awka Catholic Diocese praised Ozo Odumodu for breaking the jinx, saying he’s a role model for others. He prayed for God’s protection and provision, urging him to live up to the standards of an Ozo titleholder, promoting truth, justice, and community service.

Ozo Odumodu received praise for his humility and brevity, with well-wishers praying for his long life, good health, and happiness as he embarks on this new chapter as an Ozo titleholder.
