The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups involved in illegal sand mining activities within the council area, directing them to stop operations immediately or face legal consequences.
Speaking on June 23, Prince Okafor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection and the prevention of activities capable of causing ecological degradation and posing risks to communities.
The Mayor expressed concern over the increasing incidence of unauthorized sand excavation, stressing that environmental sustainability remains a major priority of his government.
According to him, unchecked sand mining can lead to the destruction of farmlands, damage to infrastructure, heightened erosion, and threats to the lives and livelihoods of residents.

He urged community leaders, residents, and other stakeholders to support government efforts aimed at safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.
Prince Okafor also directed relevant authorities and enforcement agencies to strengthen surveillance and monitoring of sand mining activities across the local government area to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations.

He warned that anyone found engaging in illegal sand mining or related activities in violation of environmental laws would be arrested and prosecuted.
The Mayor further encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of illegal sand mining to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
The warning, he said, reflects the local government’s resolve to protect the environment, promote responsible resource management, and support sustainable development across Awka South Local Government Area.
