‎The faithful of Annunciation Catholic Parish, Awka, marked Pentecost Sunday alongside the Feast of St. Rita of Cascia in a solemn Thanksgiving Mass for members of St. Rita’s Zone. The gathering sought the blessings and guidance of the Holy Spirit for families, the Church, and society.
‎
‎Presiding at the Mass, Fr. Edwin Obiora reflected on the significance of Pentecost and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. He stated that Pentecost, observed fifty days after Easter, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of the Church. He noted that the event transformed the disciples from fearful followers into courageous witnesses of Christ.
‎

‎Fr. Obiora described the “mighty wind” and “tongues of fire” in Acts of the Apostles as signs of God’s presence, power, and purification, adding that the Apostles’ gift of tongues signified the universality of the Gospel. He emphasized that the Holy Spirit grants diverse gifts for the edification of the Church and service to humanity.
‎
‎Addressing misconceptions, he clarified that the Catholic Church places greater emphasis on holiness, charity, and selfless service than on dramatic spiritual manifestations, noting that no canonized saint attained holiness solely through speaking in tongues. He further explained that divine grace works with human nature to perfect natural talents and urged the faithful to seek God’s grace in their vocations and daily duties.
‎

‎He encouraged the congregation to pray for the continual outpouring of the Holy Spirit, asking for wisdom, courage, peace, and steadfast faith.
‎
‎Speaking after the Mass, the President of St. Rita’s Zone, Mrs. Ogochukwu Chukwujioke, described St. Rita of Cascia as a model of perseverance and holiness, noting that her intercession strengthens the faithful in their Christian journey. Lady Faith Chude of the Catholic Women Organisation described St. Rita as the “Saint of Impossible Causes” and said the celebration was an occasion to pray for peace, unity, and God’s blessings on their homes.
