The Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, on August 15, visited the riverine community of Ogwuikpele as part of his pastoral mission to reach out to the faithful and strengthen their commitment to the catholic faith. The visit reflected the Archbishop’s commitment to his pastoral responsibility of seeking out Christ’s flock, regardless of the difficult terrain and challenging circumstances surrounding their communities.
Addressing the faithful during the visit, Archbishop Okeke, who was described as a shepherd “hungry for souls,” reminded them that there are no strangers in the house of God. He stressed that God’s love, mercy and offer of salvation are available to everyone who approaches Him with faith, humility and a sincere desire to do His will.

The Archbishop, however, noted that receiving God’s grace requires a corresponding commitment to the christian faith, obedience to God’s commandments and a life directed by His will. He urged the people of Ogwuikpele to remain steadfast despite the challenges confronting the community, emphasising that faith remains a pathway to divine favour.
According to him, although the difficulties of life may test one’s faith, believers must not abandon their trust in God. He assured the faithful that God had neither abandoned nor forgotten them, urging them to remain confident in divine providence and persevere in faith regardless of their present circumstances.
Archbishop Okeke also cautioned the people against using the blessings and privileges they receive from God to oppress, exploit or disadvantage others.
Instead, he encouraged them to become instruments of love, justice and peace, stressing the need for fairness and mutual respect within the community. He maintained that God’s blessings are not based on discrimination, noting that those who live justly, act fairly and remain receptive to divine grace are beneficiaries of God’s love.

The Archbishop further highlighted the importance of humility, explaining that salvation is not attained through human power, influence or personal achievements, but is a gratuitous gift from God that must be received with faith and humility.
Ogwuikpele is a riverine community situated around the borders of Anambra, Delta and Rivers States. The community is largely inaccessible by road, particularly during the rainy season, with waterways serving as the major means of transportation for residents and access to essential services. Despite its status as an oil-producing community, Ogwuikpele has continued to face infrastructural challenges and what residents describe as years of neglect.
The Archbishop’s visit therefore provided not only a significant spiritual encounter for the faithful but also highlighted the importance of pastoral presence in communities where geographical isolation and socio-economic challenges often limit access to essential services.
His message of hope, perseverance, humility and responsible stewardship resonated with the people as he encouraged them to remain committed to God and work collectively towards building a community anchored on love, justice, faith and mutual respect.
