The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Alex Ibezim, has emphasized that children play a crucial role in the family, the church, and the wider society.
He made the remarks on Sunday, May 31, 2026, during a special Sunday service held to commemorate Anglican Children’s Ministry Day, celebrated nationwide.
In his sermon, Bishop Ibezim described children as key participants in God’s divine plan. He cautioned parents against becoming obstacles between their children and God. He urged them to raise their children according to biblical principles and to closely supervise them to ensure they remain rooted in Christ’s teachings.
The Archbishop advised parents to speak blessings over their children rather than curses, noting that children are cherished by God. He warned against actions that push children away from God and encouraged adults to learn from children’s qualities of humility, forgiveness, and love. He also stressed the importance of praying consistently with and for children, regardless of provocation.
He condemned parents who criticize the church and its leaders in front of their children, saying such behavior weakens children’s faith and discourages their participation in church activities.
Bishop Ibezim applauded the leaders and teachers of the Children’s Ministry and urged them to demonstrate humility, forgiveness, patience, and love to attract children to Christ. He observed that children possess pure hearts and cautioned parents not to abandon their responsibility because of work, pride, or tight schedules. Instead, he urged them to devote quality time to their children and model a Christ-like lifestyle for them to follow.
He further encouraged parents to pray for their children at all times, referencing 2 Timothy 3:15, and to engage them in regular Bible study so that they remain grounded in God’s word as they grow. He also advised parents to lead their children to God and avoid setting bad examples they might copy.
The Bishop concluded by appreciating all Children’s Ministry workers, praying for God’s blessings on them, and encouraging them to persevere in service, with the assurance that “God rewards all who work in His vineyard.”
