The Anglican community in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, has been thrown into mourning following the death of Rev. Chibuzo Amakom, a newly ordained priest, in a road crash in Onitsha.
Amakom reportedly died in the accident on Sept. 4, barely two months after his ordination in the Diocese on the Niger.
The deceased served at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Nkpor, before his ordination and later served as curate at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Obosi.
He was ordained on July 19, 2026, in the Diocese on the Niger, under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo.
Amakom was reportedly present at a service at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Obosi, on Aug. 31, four days before the fatal accident.
His death has elicited grief among members of the church, family, friends and colleagues, who described him as a young priest whose ministry was cut short.
“It is a heartbreaking loss. He was a young priest whose journey in ministry had only just begun. It is difficult to comprehend that he is gone,” a member of the church community said.
Another member of the community described the incident as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and prayed for strength for the deceased’s family and loved ones.
The circumstances surrounding the accident were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
Amakom was also remembered by members of the church for his commitment to Christian ministry and preaching.
Funeral arrangements were yet to be announced as of the time of filing the report.
