Gully erosion remains a major environmental challenge in Anambra, destroying land, damaging infrastructure and threatening livelihoods in several communities across the state.

Communities such as Nanka, Oko, Agulu, Amaokpala, Ogidi, Nkpor, Ozubulu and Enugwu Agidi, as well as parts of Onitsha and Nnewi, have continued to experience the effects of erosion, with roads cut off, homes abandoned, farmlands lost and public infrastructure damaged.

The state’s vulnerability to erosion has been attributed to its geological formation, heavy rainfall and rapid urbanisation. However, human activities, including indiscriminate waste disposal, construction on natural waterways, inadequate drainage systems, unchecked sand mining, deforestation and unplanned physical development, have further aggravated the problem.

During heavy rainfall, blocked drainage channels and poorly managed waterways often cause stormwater to overflow into residential areas, accelerating soil erosion and the expansion of existing gullies.

The consequences extend beyond damaged roads and buildings to include loss of agricultural land, reduced food production, displacement of families, disruption of economic activities and increased government expenditure on infrastructure rehabilitation.

Environmental experts have called for sustained interventions to address the problem, warning that failure to tackle its underlying causes could expose more communities and valuable land to degradation.

The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to address erosion and other environmental challenges through drainage desilting, rehabilitation of erosion sites, enforcement of environmental regulations, protection of natural waterways and public sensitisation.

The government has also encouraged communities to establish environmental committees, protect natural drainage channels, construct stormwater retention facilities and adopt responsible waste management practices.

However, tackling the menace requires the active participation of residents, traditional institutions, community leaders, religious organisations, schools and civil society groups.

Regular sanitation exercises, tree planting, environmental education and compliance with physical planning regulations are among the measures that could help reduce activities contributing to erosion and flooding.

Recently, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council and Traditional Ruler of Obosi, HRH, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, warned that the continued existence of Anambra State could be threatened if urgent and concrete measures were not taken to address the erosion menace.

Iweka also urged residents to support the government’s erosion control initiatives by adopting environmentally responsible practices, stressing that safeguarding lives, property and infrastructure was a collective responsibility.

Other recommended measures for long term erosion control include reforestation, watershed management, construction of retention ponds and check dams, improved urban planning and sustained public awareness.

Environmental interventions, experts say, must go beyond engineering projects to address poor land use practices, inadequate drainage systems and human activities that contribute to environmental degradation.

The growing erosion challenge in Anambra is not merely an environmental concern but also an economic, social and developmental issue requiring coordinated action by government and residents.

As the state pursues sustainable development, sustained investment in erosion control, environmental protection and public enlightenment remains essential to safeguarding communities, infrastructure and natural resources for future generations.
