Anambra State’s drive toward environmental sustainability received a potential boost as TechnoServe Nigeria has indicated interest in partnering with the Ministry of Environment to strengthen waste management, recycling, and circular economy initiatives in the state.
This development emerged during a courtesy and familiarization visit by a TechnoServe delegation led by its State Chairman, Mr. Franklin Nwaribe, to the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, at the State Secretariat, Awka on June 9.
During the visit, Mr. Nwaribe congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment and reaffirmed TechnoServe’s commitment to supporting innovative environmental programmes aimed at promoting sustainable development and economic growth.
He explained that TechnoServe, an international non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., operates in over 29 countries, working with entrepreneurs, businesses, and institutions to build sustainable industries, improve livelihoods, and create economic opportunities.
He further noted the organization’s growing interest in Anambra State, describing it as an emerging hub in the waste management value chain. According to him, TechnoServe is prepared to support efforts aimed at converting waste into wealth while promoting environmental sustainability.
In his response, Dr. Aguiyi welcomed the delegation and described the proposed partnership as timely and strategic, especially in addressing the state’s environmental challenges and opportunities. He identified plastic waste as a major environmental concern in Anambra and stressed the need for innovative solutions that not only reduce pollution but also generate economic value from waste materials.
The commissioner reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to initiatives that create jobs, encourage recycling, strengthen environmental responsibility, and transform waste into viable economic assets.
Dr. Aguiyi also unveiled plans to establish an Environmental Academy, which would serve as a training hub for waste managers, environmental practitioners, community leaders, and other stakeholders in sustainable environmental practices, climate action, and community-driven environmental stewardship. He emphasized that long-term environmental sustainability depends on continuous public awareness, behavioural change, and active community participation in waste management systems.
He also expressed the Ministry’s readiness to deepen collaboration with TechnoServe in areas such as technical assistance, policy advisory services, institutional strengthening, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building.
Dr. Aguiyi underscored that the environmental reforms are in consonance with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda for a clean, smart, organized, and economically viable Anambra State. He added that effective waste management, recycling systems, circular economy practices, and community ownership remain key pillars in achieving that vision.
Members of the TechnoServe delegation pledged to deploy their global networks, technical expertise, and partnerships to secure investment and international support for the advancement of Anambra’s environmental sector.
