The Anambra State Government has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls across the state.
Under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the State Executive Council includes one of the highest numbers of female commissioners in Anambra’s history. Women currently head key ministries, departments and agencies, including the Ministries of Health, Information, Women Affairs and Education.
The Wife of the Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Nonye Soludo, has also continued to champion initiatives focused on women’s health, girl-child education and the fight against gender-based violence.
To strengthen the protection of women and vulnerable persons, the state has domesticated the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP). It has also established Family Courts and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Response Teams to ensure prompt intervention and access to justice for survivors.
The government has further intensified public enlightenment campaigns in schools, markets and communities to discourage child marriage, widowhood maltreatment and other harmful traditional practices.
In the health sector, the state provides free antenatal care, free delivery services and other maternal healthcare interventions aimed at reducing maternal mortality and easing the financial burden on women. Menstrual hygiene education and the distribution of sanitary pads have also been introduced in public schools to promote the health and well-being of adolescent girls.
In the education sector, the government continues to enforce free education for girls in public primary and secondary schools while promoting campaigns that encourage girls to remain in school and complete their education, regardless of challenges such as early pregnancy or pressure to marry at a young age.
As part of its economic empowerment initiatives, the state has implemented programmes such as the “1 Youth, 2 Skills” initiative and women cooperative grants, providing women with vocational training, business support and access to grants to strengthen their livelihoods and promote financial independence.
