The Anambra State Specialist Eye Centre, Nise, has announced a free cataract surgery and glaucoma screening and treatment programme aimed at restoring sight and improving eye health for residents across the state.
The initiative, organised under the Anambra State Ministry of Health, is part of the government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare services, especially for people suffering from preventable blindness and other eye diseases.
Registration for the programme begins on July 22 and will end on July 25. Eligible residents are encouraged to visit the Anambra State Specialist Eye Centre, Nise, within the registration period for screening and assessment.
Free cataract surgeries will take place from July 27, to July 29 after patients have been examined and confirmed to require the procedure.
The Ministry of Health stated that the programme will also include free glaucoma screening and treatment. Early detection of glaucoma is important because the disease often develops without noticeable symptoms and can lead to permanent blindness if left untreated.
According to the organisers, priority will be given to elderly people, who are more likely to suffer from cataracts and glaucoma. Residents are therefore encouraged to help elderly family members and neighbours take advantage of the opportunity.
The Ministry called on residents to make use of the free programme, describing it as another effort by the Anambra State Government to reduce avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life of its citizens through accessible healthcare services.
