Anambra pupils have secured the first and second positions in the national quiz competition of the Science Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (STAN), reinforcing the state’s growing profile in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
The feat was recorded at the 66th Annual Conference of STAN, held from Aug. 17 to 20 at Community Secondary School, Akai Offot, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with participants drawn from across the country.

Okeke Delight Ugochukwu and Onwuzurigbo Chinaza Emmanuella, both of Holy Ghost International Primary School, Awka, emerged first and second respectively in the national quiz competition for primary pupils.
Anambra recorded strong performances in the secondary school category. Obi-Okwubanego Chimamanda Flora of Gonzaga Jesuit College placed fourth in the national quiz, while St. Charles College, Onitsha, secured fourth position nationally in the Secondary School Project category.

The award winning pupils and students were presented to the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, when the state STAN leadership paid a courtesy visit to him at the Jerome Udorji Secretariat Complex, Awka, on Oct. 2.
Commending the learners and their teachers, Ogugua said the achievements demonstrated the value of sustained exposure to STEM education, as well as the creativity, confidence and academic potential of Anambra children.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to partnering with STAN to strengthen science education, promote teacher development and provide more opportunities for learners to demonstrate their knowledge through academic competitions and innovation.
The STAN State Chairman, Dr. Bibiana Okoli, used the visit to brief the Commissioner on the association’s 2026/2027 programmes, including workshops, conferences, competitions and publications designed to enhance teachers’ capacity and improve classroom delivery.
Okoli appealed for support for teacher’s training, workshops and conferences, particularly programmes targeting identified learning gaps in WAEC, NECO and BECE, and sought assistance in facilitating teachers’ participation in such professional development activities.
In her vote of thanks, the STAN Anambra State Secretary, Dr. Nkiru Samuel, appreciated the commissioner for receiving the association and celebrating the achievements of Anambra learners, expressing optimism that his leadership would further inspire interest and commitment to the teaching profession.
Also present was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu.
