The Anambra State Police Command has described the early-morning attack on residential settlers in Agu-Ifite on July 21 as a calculated criminal attempt to incite ethnic tension and undermine the peace and security enjoyed in Anambra State.
In a statement issued on July 22, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command noted that Ndi Anambra have continued to demonstrate unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, refusing to be drawn into divisive ethnic narratives. He added that this collective resolve has frustrated the perpetrators’ intention of creating discord among residents.
Following the incident, a police-led Joint Security Team visited the scene to carry out an on-the-spot assessment and operational review. The team engaged community leaders, representatives of the affected settlers and other key stakeholders to strengthen public confidence, obtain firsthand information and enhance ongoing security operations.
The command disclosed that intelligence gathered from survivors and other credible sources has generated useful leads. Consequently, security operatives have intensified intelligence-driven and coordinated manhunt operations aimed at identifying, apprehending and prosecuting all those involved in the attack.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm, stay vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information. It further promised to continue to safeguarding every law-abiding resident of Anambra State, irrespective of ethnic or religious background, and assured that every effort would be made to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.
