The Chairman of the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, has urged members to fully embrace the escalation of news stories in order to make a positive impact and strengthen their influence in the state.
He gave the charge during the August congress of the union held at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Centre, Awka.
Addressing members, Comrade Odogwu expressed displeasure over the attitude of journalists who attended the congress without filing reports on its activities. He stressed that the monthly congress provides fertile ground for news hunting, urging members to take advantage of the events and personalities present to generate multiple news stories.
“You are not here to just sit and warm the chair while newsworthy events are flying around. You are expected to jot down salient points, develop them into stories, and escalate them through your news platforms and social media channels, especially when news-making personalities grace the congress.”
He added that consistent news escalation not only builds a journalist’s portfolio and brand but also creates opportunities for extra income and professional growth.
The Anambra NUJ congress is a monthly gathering of registered members in the state to discuss union matters, state issues, and chart the way forward for the profession.
