The Anambra State Government has urged residents to report dilapidated buildings and visible structural defects in their communities to help prevent building collapse as well as protect lives and property.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, made the call on Oct.13, in a statement issued by the ministry, warning that neglected buildings and structural weaknesses pose serious safety risks.
He stressed that preventing building collapse requires collective responsibility, noting that public cooperation is essential to the government’s efforts to create safer communities across the state.
“Dilapidated buildings and structural defects can pose serious risks to lives and property. Don’t wait until disaster strikes,” Ojukwu warned.
The commissioner advised residents who notice cracks, structural damage or other signs of danger in buildings to promptly notify the ministry for appropriate assessment and necessary action.
He emphasised that early reporting could help authorities identify potential hazards before they escalate into disasters, thereby reducing the risk of injuries, loss of lives and property damage.
Ojukwu reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to enforcing physical planning regulations and promoting safe building practices, urging residents, property owners and developers to prioritise structural safety.
