In commemoration of International Plastic Free Day, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has intensified efforts to reduce plastic pollution, strengthen waste management and promote environmental sustainability across Anambra State.
One of the key initiatives introduced by the state government is the Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge, implemented through the Ministry of Environment and the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), encouraging residents and communities to collect, sort, and recycle plastic waste instead of dumping or burning it indiscriminately. Beyond protecting the environment, the initiative is also aimed at creating economic opportunities through recycling and waste recovery activities.
As part of broader environmental reforms, the government has commenced measures to phase out single-use plastics while promoting the use of biodegradable alternatives. Authorities have also stepped up enforcement against indiscriminate refuse disposal, open burning of plastics, and other unhealthy environmental practices linked to flooding, erosion, and pollution.
Another major milestone is the enactment and implementation of the Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law, 2024. The law provides a stronger legal framework for environmental sanitation, waste control, pollution management, and public participation in environmental protection efforts. It also empowers agencies such as ASWAMA and the OCHA Brigade to improve enforcement and maintain cleaner communities across the state.
The Soludo administration has equally sustained public sensitization campaigns in markets, schools, and communities, particularly in major urban centres such as Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi. The campaigns are focused on educating residents about proper waste segregation, recycling practices, and environmental cleanliness. Waste bins and sorting systems are also being introduced in public places to improve plastic waste collection and disposal.
The government has further linked indiscriminate plastic disposal to the persistent erosion and flooding challenges affecting many communities in the state. This has led to increased advocacy for responsible waste disposal practices and stronger environmental enforcement aimed at protecting drainages, waterways, and public health.
