Anambra State Government says it will no longer tolerate poor hygiene standards in abattoirs across the state, as part of efforts to protect public health.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, made this known on June 3 during a surprise inspection of Kwata Abattoir in Awka South LGA. The visit was ahead of the statewide environmental sanitation exercise fixed for July 4.
Dr. Aguiyi faulted the sanitary condition of the facility. He pointed to improper disposal of animal waste, clogged drains, offensive smells, and weak waste management systems as issues that pose health risks to residents.
He ordered operators to immediately improve cleanliness and adhere to environmental laws. The commissioner warned that any abattoir that fails to meet the required standards would be sealed without hesitation.
He restated the Ministry’s goal of turning all slaughter facilities in the state into clean and safe environments.
The commissioner also urged residents and business owners to fully participate in the July 4 sanitation exercise, adding that enforcement of environmental regulations will be stricter across Anambra.
Responding, Vice Chairman of Kwata Abattoir, Mr. Emeka Ugwu, acknowledged the problems raised, thanked Dr. Aguiyi for the inspection, and promised that management would improve sanitation practices.
Dr. Aguiyi reaffirm Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to making Anambra a clean, green, and healthy state, noting that keeping the environment safe is everyone’s responsibility.
