The Anambra State Government has approved major policy reforms aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, expanding access to justice, and addressing accommodation challenges facing students in tertiary institutions across the state.

The decisions were reached during the 5th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council held on Monday, July 6, at the Light House, Awka, and were disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor.

Speaking during an interview with journalist at his office today in the State Secretariat, Awka, Dr. Mefor gave an insight on how the government has strengthened its grievance redress mechanism to ensure that complaints from residents receive prompt attention within 24 to 48 hours.

He encouraged Ndi Anambra to confidently report concerns relating to governance, public services, or any form of injustice, assuring that every genuine complaint would be treated with urgency and fairness under the Solution Administration.

To tackle the shortage of students’ accommodation, the Executive Council approved a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) partnership with private developers. Under the arrangement, the government will provide land while investors construct and manage hostels for an agreed period before transferring ownership to the state.

According to Dr. Mefor, the initiative is designed to reduce the burden on students living off-campus, improve their safety and welfare, and provide a more conducive environment that supports learning and campus life.

The council also expressed concern that many residents are unaware of the newly established Small Claims Court. It therefore resolved to intensify public enlightenment to ensure more people understand and utilise the court’s services.

Dr. Mefor explained that the Small Claims Court offers a simple, affordable, and speedy means of resolving minor monetary disputes without the need to hire lawyers, making justice more accessible to the poor and vulnerable.

Reaffirming Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to people-centred governance, the commissioner said the administration will continue implementing practical policies that improve citizens’ welfare, expand opportunities, and ensure that every resident has access to responsive government services.
