The Anambra State Government has confirmed Mr. Nonso Chukwuma Ebonwu as Commissioner-designate for Commerce, bringing on board a seasoned commerce and financial systems professional with extensive experience in digital trade infrastructure, enterprise growth and economic development across Nigeria and West Africa.
Ebonwu, an indigene of Akili Ogidi in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, is widely regarded as a strategic-minded executive with proven expertise in banking, digital commerce systems, institutional partnerships and market expansion.
A statement on his profile showed that he attended Kings College, Lagos, before obtaining a degree in Production Technology from Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
He later earned a Master’s degree with Merit in International Business Management from Leeds Beckett University and is currently pursuing an Executive MBA at Lagos Business School.
Before his nomination, Ebonwu served as Head of Sales and Account Management for Nigeria and Sierra Leone at Interswitch, where he led commercial strategy, enterprise partnerships and market expansion initiatives aimed at deepening digital trade infrastructure and promoting financial inclusion.
His professional career also spans key strategic positions at Sterling Bank Stanbic IBTC Bank and Diamond Bank, where he distinguished himself in SME banking, digital commerce solutions, business development and enterprise relationship management.
While at Stanbic IBTC Bank, Ebonwu reportedly drove over 80 per cent digital adoption across commercial client portfolios and exceeded growth targets through innovative market strategies and value-chain financing solutions.
At Sterling Bank, he played a significant role in the launch of the Omni X platform, a digital commerce and collections solution designed to enhance business efficiency and financial accessibility.
The commissioner-designate also facilitated a capacity-building programme for the Central Bank of Sierra Leone focused on strengthening the country’s digital trade and payment infrastructure.
A certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Ebonwu is recognized for his strong institutional understanding, technical expertise and commitment to building sustainable systems that support enterprise development, economic growth and public-private sector collaboration.
Observers believe his wealth of experience in commerce systems, banking and digital economy development will further strengthen Anambra State’s drive toward innovation, investment promotion and expansion of commercial opportunities across the state.
