The Anambra State Ministry of Health has directed all government-approved healthcare facilities across the state to prominently display official Health Facility Accreditation Stickers as part of efforts to eliminate quack medical practice and strengthen public confidence in healthcare services.
The directive was announced by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, during a statewide health facility accreditation exercise conducted on July 24.
Dr. Obidike explained that the initiative is designed to ensure that only licensed and government-approved healthcare facilities operate within the state, while providing residents with access to safe, quality and comprehensive healthcare services.
According to him, the newly introduced accreditation stickers will serve as a visible means of identifying genuine healthcare facilities that have met the Ministry’s regulatory standards, making it easier for members of the public to distinguish them from unlicensed operators. He described the initiative as a significant step towards enhancing transparency, patient safety and quality healthcare delivery across Anambra State.
Dr. Obidike stated that all private hospitals, maternity homes, medical laboratories, dental clinics and other healthcare establishments are now required to renew their operational licences and accreditation annually added that only facilities that successfully meet the ministry’s prescribed standards will receive the official accreditation sticker, which must be displayed in a conspicuous location where patients and visitors can easily see it.
He further disclosed that each sticker contains a unique QR code that enables members of the public to verify the accreditation status of any healthcare facility using a smartphone. The sticker also carries the Ministry’s official website and contact details through which complaints can be lodged and suspected cases of quackery reported. “This initiative will help eliminate quackery and ensure that only qualified and licensed healthcare providers offer medical services in the state,” he said.
The commissioner reaffirmed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to building a healthcare system anchored on quality service delivery, professionalism and accountability.
Also speaking during the exercise, the Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, said the accreditation programme is intended to strengthen healthcare regulation by ensuring that all health facilities comply with established professional and legal standards before receiving approval to operate.
He explained that inspection teams assess facilities based on critical areas, including infrastructure, availability of equipment, staffing, infection prevention and control measures, waste management, emergency preparedness and proper record-keeping. Dr. Chukwulobelu assured that the Ministry would continue routine monitoring and inspections to ensure accredited healthcare facilities maintain the required standards.
As part of the exercise, the accreditation team visited several healthcare facilities in Awka, where officials presented and affixed the official Health Facility Accreditation Stickers after the facilities successfully renewed their operational licences for the 2026 accreditation year.
