The Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, Dr Edwin Emegakor, who was abducted from his hospital on May 7, 2026, has regained freedom.

His release was confirmed on Sunday, 10 May, by the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Anambra State Branch, Dr Princeton Okam. According to Okam, the doctor was freed with the help of police operatives and has reunited with his family.

“He is healthy, in good spirit and already reunited with his family,” He did not disclose whether any ransom was paid.

Dr Emegakor was reportedly seized on the evening of May 7 after attending to patients by gunmen alleged to be in security uniforms. Witnesses said security operatives at the hospital, medical personnel and other workers were held at gunpoint and their phones confiscated during the incident.

The abduction had triggered a 48-hour ultimatum from the Anambra Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, which threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if their colleague was not released. The association issued the warning in a communiqué after an emergency general meeting on Saturday, 9 May.

With his release, the planned strike has been averted. Okam expressed gratitude to God and thanked the security agencies for their intervention.
