As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, has called on Nigerians to embrace sober reflection rather than rehearsing the “old rhetoric” that often accompanies the annual celebration.
In his Independence message, the Mayor acknowledged the challenges Nigeria has faced since 1960, noting decades of political mismanagement, institutional weakness, and leadership failures. However, he stressed that despite these setbacks, Nigeria still holds immense potential, anchored on the resilience, creativity, and resourcefulness of its people.
“Potential alone is not progress,” the Mayor said, adding that building a nation that works requires deliberate and sustained action from both leaders and citizens.
Highlighting local efforts in Onitsha North, Mayor Nwora pointed to the ongoing renovation of the council headquarters as evidence of his administration’s commitment to institutional renewal and effective service delivery. He described the initiative as part of a governance approach inspired by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, whose vision of transformative leadership continues to set the pace for public officials across Anambra State.
Addressing young people in Onitsha North, the Mayor reassured them of his administration’s readiness to invest in their future through targeted programs that focus on capacity building and opportunities, not tokenism. He said that new youth-focused initiatives would soon be unveiled across the 15 wards of the LGA.
Mayor Nwora emphasized that the anniversary should be a moment for both leaders and citizens to take stock and renew their commitment to Nigeria’s progress. “If Nigeria is ever to become the country we desire, then that work must begin with each of us, wherever we find ourselves,” he said.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful Independence Day, praying for renewed discipline, unity, and the courage to build a nation worthy of its promise.
