The ancient kingdom of Onitsha is set to celebrate the 2026 Ofala Festival of His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, Agbogidi, Obi of Onitsha.
The 25th Ofala Festival is scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2026, at the Ime Obi, along Awka Road, Onitsha, promising a colourful display of tradition and cultural heritage.
The Obi of Onitsha is the kingdom’s revered traditional ruler and custodian of its customs, serving as a link between the people, their ancestors and cultural heritage.
The Ofala Festival celebrates the monarch’s successful completion of spiritual retreat and purification, symbolising renewal, spiritual rejuvenation and the kingdom’s transition from one traditional year to another.
The festival also reflects the significance of traditional rites, including Igu Aro Omenani, which embodies the preservation of Onitsha’s customs and the continuity of its ancestral heritage.
As one of the most prominent cultural celebrations in Onitsha, Ofala provides an opportunity to showcase the kingdom’s rich traditions, colourful regalia, royal pageantry and enduring cultural values.
Beyond its cultural significance, the festival offers an opportunity to reflect on achievements in the outgoing year, appreciate the kingdom’s progress and encourage aspirations for greater development.
Ahead of the main celebration, the National Students Association and Onitsha Ado youths are expected to stage a carnival on October 14, showcasing the magnificence of the Onitsha monarchy and the community’s cultural heritage.
The 2026 Ofala Festival is expected to attract traditional rulers, government officials, dignitaries, indigenes and visitors, further promoting Onitsha’s cultural identity and strengthening its position as a centre of Igbo heritage.
