The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., has directed residents of the state to obtain approval from the Ministry of Environment before cutting down any tree, whether within or outside their premises, warning that violators will face the full weight of the state’s environmental laws.

Dr. Aguiyi gave the directive during an ongoing radio programme on ABS 88.5 FM, Awka, where he reiterated the commitment of the Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to combating climate change and building a livable, environmentally sustainable state.

The commissioner expressed concern over the increasing rate of indiscriminate tree felling, describing it as a major contributor to climate change and environmental degradation.

He stressed that halting the indiscriminate cutting of trees is essential to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change across the state.

He further urged Ndi Anambra to create and maintain more green areas within their homes and communities, while also providing catchment pits to regulate stormwater runoff and reduce flooding during the rainy season.

According to Dr. Aguiyi, tree planting and afforestation remain critical strategies for conserving biodiversity, preserving forests and game reserves, and ensuring a healthier environment for present and future generations.

The commissioner disclosed that the Soludo administration has planted over two million trees since assuming office, describing the achievement as a significant step toward restoring the state’s ecosystem.

He called on residents to take ownership of their environment by protecting existing trees, planting more trees, and supporting government policies aimed at environmental conservation.
“Our environment is our collective responsibility. We must protect nature so that nature will not turn against us,” Dr. Aguiyi stated.
