As the world marks World Teachers’ Day on October 5, attention is once again drawn to the vital role teachers play in shaping young minds, building human capital and laying the foundation for Nigeria’s future.

Teachers do more than deliver lessons or prepare students for examinations. They nurture talents, shape character, encourage discipline and help young people discover their abilities, values and aspirations.

For Nigeria, where human capital remains central to national development, the influence of teachers cannot be overstated. Every doctor, engineer, lawyer, entrepreneur, scientist and public servant begins a journey of learning, often under the guidance of a teacher.

In Anambra State, where education and academic excellence remain important to human capital development, teachers are central to preparing young people for a rapidly changing world.

However, meaningful appreciation of teachers must go beyond ceremonies and commendations. Their welfare, professional development, working conditions and access to modern teaching resources require sustained attention. A well-supported teacher is better equipped to inspire and prepare students for the future.

The classroom is also evolving. Technology, artificial intelligence, emerging skills and changing social realities are transforming what students need to learn. Continuous training and access to appropriate tools are therefore essential for teachers to remain effective.

Parents and communities also have a responsibility. Strong partnerships among schools, families and communities can create supportive environments where children receive not only quality education but also the guidance needed to become responsible citizens.

World Teachers’ Day is therefore a reminder that education is about more than certificates; it is about developing people and, through them, strengthening society.

As Nigeria and Anambra celebrate teachers, we salute those who continue to teach, inspire and believe in the potential of every child. If we want a stronger Nigeria tomorrow, we must strengthen the classrooms of today.
