As the world marks World Spine Day on October 16, health experts have urged residents to prioritise spinal health through regular physical activity, proper posture and healthy lifestyle choices.

The 2026 observance, themed “Spine Health for Life,” highlights the importance of protecting spinal health throughout life, promoting mobility, independence and overall well-being.

Spinal health is essential for everyday activities, including walking, sitting, standing and lifting. However, poor posture, prolonged sitting, physical inactivity and improper lifting techniques can contribute to back pain and other musculoskeletal problems.

Residents are advised to maintain proper posture while sitting and standing, take regular breaks from prolonged sitting, exercise appropriately and practise safe techniques when lifting heavy objects.

Workplaces are also encouraged to promote ergonomic practices, including properly arranged workstations and opportunities for movement, to reduce unnecessary strain on the back and neck.

Health professionals further advise residents experiencing persistent back pain, numbness, weakness or other unusual symptoms to seek medical attention for proper assessment and treatment.

Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and rehabilitation can help people manage spinal conditions, maintain mobility and improve their quality of life.

World Spine Day therefore provides an opportunity for individuals, families, workplaces and communities to embrace preventive practices and make spinal health a lifelong priority.
