World Rainforest Day is observed annually on June 22, it highlights the vital role forests play in climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and disaster prevention. With Nigeria having lost a significant portion of its original forest cover over the years, the observance is particularly relevant to states facing challenges such as erosion, flooding, and the effects of climate change.

In Anambra State, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability through policies and programmes that align with the objectives of World Rainforest Day. A notable example is the “Plant a Tree, Save a Life” initiative, under which more than one million economic and ornamental trees have been planted across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas since 2022.

The programme is designed to address pressing environmental concerns, particularly gully erosion and rising urban temperatures through the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency, ANSEWCCA formerly known as ANSERECA, tree planting has been integrated into erosion control projects in communities such as Nnewi, Ogbaru, Ekwusigo, and other erosion prone areas.

The establishment of tree belts and vegetation buffers is helping to stabilize soil, reduce surface runoff, and mitigate the devastating effects of erosion that have displaced communities and destroyed infrastructure for decades.

Beyond afforestation efforts, the Soludo administration has incorporated environmental protection into its Governance and Value System agenda. Ministries, Departments and Agencies, schools, markets, and communities are encouraged to promote environmental responsibility, while measures have been introduced to discourage indiscriminate tree felling and environmental degradation. These actions reflect the core message of World Rainforest Day, which emphasizes collective responsibility and accountability in forest conservation.

As the world marks World Rainforest Day 2026, Anambra State can point to tangible efforts aimed at protecting the environment and promoting climate resilience. Anambra State’s environmental initiatives demonstrate that meaningful climate action begins at the local level. Through strategic tree planting, erosion control measures, and environmental awareness campaigns, the Soludo administration is laying the foundation for a greener, healthier, and more resilient state.

However, the success of these efforts will ultimately depend on sustained community participation, responsible environmental practices, and a collective commitment to protecting the natural resources that support life and livelihoods.

World Rainforest Day serves as a reminder that the protection of forests is not solely the responsibility of governments but of every citizen. By nurturing and preserving the environment today, Anambra can secure a safer and more sustainable future for generations to come.
