As the world marks World Milk Day, attention has been drawn to the role of nutritious foods, including milk in promoting healthy living, strong development, and improved food security across communities.
In Anambra State, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has continued to advance agriculture, nutrition and food security initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing and livelihoods of residents, emphasizing access to affordable nutritious food, sustainable agricultural practices and a healthier population as part of its development agenda.
The Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture has identified food security, nutrition and sustainable agricultural transformation as key priorities. Through programmes such as the Farm-to-Feed Campaign, support for smallholder farmers and community-based food production initiatives, the state is working to ensure greater availability of healthy and nutritious food items for residents.
In addition, the Healthy Living Gardens Initiative, championed by the wife of the governor has helped promote nutrition awareness among schoolchildren, encouraging healthier eating habits and early education on balanced diets.
Milk, widely recognized as a rich source of protein, calcium, vitamins and other essential nutrients, remains important for growth and development, particularly among children. World Milk Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is observed globally to raise awareness of milk’s contribution to healthy diets and sustainable food systems.
Although Anambra State is not a major dairy-producing region, stakeholders note that ongoing government interventions in agriculture, nutrition awareness, and food security align with broader efforts to ensure that residents have access to wholesome and balanced diets necessary for healthy living.
