As the world marks World Eating Disorder Action Day on June 2, there is a high need for greater awareness of eating disorders and the importance of promoting healthy nutrition, positive body image and mental wellbeing among young people and families in Anambra State.

World Eating Disorders Action Day is observed annually to raise awareness about eating disorders, encourage early intervention and advocate improved access to care and support for those affected by conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and other related illnesses.

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical health conditions that can affect people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. They often result from a combination of psychological, social, environmental and biological factors.

In Anambra State, growing attention has been placed on public health education, nutrition and mental health awareness through various government and community-based initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents.

Education in schools, communities and healthcare facilities are to help young people develop healthy eating habits and self-esteem while discouraging unhealthy dieting practices and body-image pressures.

The importance of family support and early medical intervention, timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve recovery outcomes for individuals living with eating disorders.

As the global community observes World Eating Disorders Action Day, governments, healthcare providers, educators and parents are expected to work together to create supportive environments that promote healthy lifestyles, mental wellness and access to quality healthcare services.

Raising awareness remains one of the most effective ways to reduce stigma, encourage those struggling with eating disorders to seek help before the conditions become life-threatening.
