The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged expectant and nursing mothers across the state to practise exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a child’s life, describing it as the best foundation for healthy growth and development.
In a message shared on her social media platforms on August 3 to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), themed “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen Support Systems,” Dr. Soludo stressed that infants require only breast milk during their first six months.
According to her, health experts recommend that babies within this period should not be given water, herbal mixtures, pap, cereals, or any other food, as breast milk alone provides all the nutrients needed for healthy development.
The first lady applauded mothers for their dedication and sacrifices in nurturing and protecting their children, describing breastfeeding as a priceless gift that strengthens a child’s immune system, supports healthy growth, and fosters a strong bond between mother and baby.
Dr. Soludo noted that exclusive breastfeeding supplies babies with complete nutrition, protects them from infections, and plays a significant role in reducing childhood illnesses and mortality. She further reaffirmed the Anambra State Government’s commitment to promoting maternal and child health through its Healthy Living Initiative and other healthcare programmes.
She said the government would continue to intensify awareness campaigns, provide education, and strengthen support systems to empower mothers to breastfeed with confidence. “We are building an Anambra where every mother is empowered to breastfeed with confidence and every child is given the opportunity to thrive from the very beginning,” she stated.
