Some women in Anambra State have excitedly cheered Governor Chukwuma Soludo for appointing women into key positions in his second-term cabinet, describing the move as both progressive and inclusive.
A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chinelo Igwe while praising this strategic move by the governor, pointed out that women are often restricted to roles linked to social affairs rather than critical decision-making positions.
According to her, the development promotes women’s participation in politics and advances gender parity, in line with the United Nations’ goal of equal representation in governance.
Prof. Igwe noted that the appointments reflect responsiveness to global calls for increased female representation and participation in leadership.
The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State chapter, Tochukwu Ifejika, described the appointment of the state’s first female Secretary to the State Government as historic.
She noted that no woman had previously occupied the position since the creation of the state, describing the development as encouraging.
Governor Soludo’s second-term team includes Chiamaka Nnake as Secretary to the State Government, Ngozi Iwouno as Head of service, Ngozi Okoye as Deputy State Chief of Protocol and Chinwe Okoli as Special Advicer on Innovation and Business Incubation.
Residents said they remain optimistic that subsequent appointments will further enhance inclusivity and balance representation in governance.
