WHEN LOVED ONES VANISH: ANAMBRA JOINS GLOBAL CALL FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE

As the world marks the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30, attention turns to people who vanish after arrest, detention, abduction or other forms of unlawful removal, leaving families without answers.

The UN-designated observance raises awareness of enforced disappearance and its impact on victims, families and communities, while calling for truth, justice, accountability and respect for human rights.

Enforced disappearance occurs when authorities, or those acting with their support, deprive someone of liberty and then refuse to acknowledge it or conceal the person’s fate or whereabouts. Families are left in painful uncertainty, often facing emotional, financial and social hardship as they search for information and justice.

For Anambra State, the day is an opportunity to reaffirm the protection of life, human dignity and the rule of law. It also highlights the need for effective systems through which families can report missing persons and receive timely assistance.

Preventing disappearances requires cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, communities, civil society organisations and families. The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance provides a global framework for prevention, victim protection and accountability.

With 2026 marking 20 years since the Convention’s adoption, the observance is a reminder that stronger action remains necessary. It also calls for protection of human rights defenders, lawyers, journalists and others who support affected families.

For those still waiting, the message is simple: every missing person has a name, a family and a story that deserves to be heard.

As Anambra joins the global community, the day reminds us that protecting human life and dignity requires vigilance, responsible institutions and a firm commitment to justice.
