As the world marks Sustainable Gastronomy Day on June 18, Anambra State is showcasing a range of initiatives that promote sustainable food production, healthy living, environmental stewardship and the preservation of local food systems.

The global observance highlights the connection between food, culture, agriculture and sustainable development. In Anambra, several government-led programmes and community-based interventions reflect these principles, positioning the state as a growing advocate of environmentally responsible agriculture and food security.

A major pillar of the state’s approach is the adoption of regenerative agriculture, a farming model designed to restore soil health, improve productivity, reducing reliance on chemical inputs, encouraging the use of compost and organic manure while promoting environmentally friendly cultivation methods that support long-term agricultural sustainability.

Complementing this effort is the Healthy Living Initiative spearheaded by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo. Through the programme, schools, households and communities are encouraged to establish organic gardens, embracing healthier food choices, promoting nutritious diets while fostering sustainable food production practices at the grassroots level.

The state’s commitment to food security is also evident in its “Farm to Feed” campaign, which encourages residents to grow food in their homes and communities, aiming to strengthen local food systems, reduce dependence on external supplies and build resilience against food shortages.

Anambra has equally taken steps to preserve its rich agricultural heritage through the conservation and reintroduction of indigenous crops. In communities such as Akili Ogbaru, efforts are underway to protect local plant species and traditional food sources, helping to safeguard biodiversity while promoting the consumption of nutritious indigenous foods.

Beyond these initiatives, the state has invested significantly in agricultural transformation programmes, including the Oil Palm and Coconut Revolution, irrigation projects in Ayamelum, the distribution of organic fertilisers and support for smallholder farmers. These interventions are designed to boost food production while maintaining ecological balance.

Research institutions are also playing a vital role in advancing sustainable food systems. Scholars and researchers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and other institutions continue to promote climate-smart agriculture through innovation, research and youth-focused capacity-building programmes.

As Sustainable Gastronomy Day is observed globally, Anambra’s efforts demonstrate how sustainable agriculture, healthy food choices, preservating of indigenous crops can contribute to a more resilient food system. The state’s initiatives reflect the broader goal of ensuring that food production not only meets present needs but also protects the environment and supports future generations.
