Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, expressed disappointment over some workers not being at their desks during an impromptu inspection at the Jerome Udorji State Secretariat Complex, Awka. He observed that, just minutes before 10:00am, some staff had yet to arrive, though he praised those already at their desks for their dedication and efficiency in serving Ndi Anambra.
“We will take strict action. For those who are not committed, I have instructed that their salaries be ducked and suspended for several months because they are not willing to work. We can operate with a smaller, more committed team, because if you do not show up early and serve the people, you are not fit for the job.”
Upon arrival, he ordered the gate to be closed, saying, “During my walkthrough, I noticed some workers locked out, which indicates they arrived after 10:00am, and often leave early. This is unacceptable.
“We cannot maintain a service that functions this way. I am committed to having an agile, effective, and efficient civil service, and those willing to serve are welcome. The bad eggs who do not come early or provide proper service will be removed. Ndi Anambra is an A-State, and we cannot afford a Z-grade civil service.
“Since some civil servants are unwilling to do their jobs, we will hire competent people who are ready to work. We will leverage technology and implement strict supervision and evaluation. I plan to make these surprise visits regularly when I am available. It’s better to have ten dedicated, capable staff than a thousand who are not committed.”
Governor Soludo also pledged to improve the Secretariat’s infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply. He mentioned that the Secretariat would be transformed into a luxurious, modern facility.
The Governor visited the Ministry of Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Ministry of Economic and Budget Planning, Ministry of Finance, the Head of Service, Ministry of Education, among others.
