As the world marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, global attention once again focuses on the urgent responsibility of protecting workers from preventable accidents, occupational diseases, and unsafe working conditions.

This year’s theme is “Let’s Ensure a Healthy Psychological Working Environment”

The annual observance is more than a ceremonial event; it represents a shared international commitment to preserving human life, promoting decent work, and building a workplace culture where safety is embedded in everyday operations rather than treated as an afterthought.

Across industries worldwide, workers continue to encounter numerous risks, including unsafe equipment, exposure to hazardous substances, and growing psychosocial pressures linked to modern work environments. These challenges reinforce the importance of workplace safety as a cornerstone of social justice, economic stability, and sustainable development. A safe workforce not only protects lives but also strengthens productivity, reduces economic losses, and enhances organizational efficiency.

Led by the International Labour Organization, the global campaign calls on governments, employers, labour unions, and workers to strengthen regulatory frameworks, improve safety standards, and invest in preventive measures that minimize workplace injuries and fatalities. The message remains clear: economic growth and worker protection are mutually reinforcing goals. Societies thrive when workers operate in environments that safeguard their health and dignity.

In Anambra State, workplace safety has increasingly become central to development planning. As a leading commercial and industrial hub with vibrant economic activities in Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka, the state recognizes that sustainable economic progress must prioritize the wellbeing of its workforce. Protecting workers is therefore viewed not only as a regulatory obligation but as a key driver of long-term development.

The Anambra State Government has made notable progress in strengthening occupational health and safety practices across public and private sectors. Regulatory agencies and relevant ministries have intensified routine inspections of construction sites, markets, factories, and public institutions to ensure compliance with safety regulations. These proactive measures help identify hazards early, promote the use of personal protective equipment, and discourage unsafe practices that may endanger workers and the public.

In addition to enforcement, the state continues to promote safety awareness through training programmes, sensitization campaigns, and collaboration with professional associations and labour organizations.

Workers across construction, transportation, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors are increasingly exposed to safety education focused on accident prevention, emergency preparedness, and responsible workplace conduct.

Reforms within the civil service have further improved workplace wellbeing through strengthened welfare policies, enhanced office safety procedures, and regular medical screening initiatives. Investments in healthcare infrastructure also support workers by improving access to quality medical services across the state.

Stricter urban planning measures and stronger enforcement of building regulations demonstrate the government’s resolve to prevent structural failures and ensure accountability within the construction sector. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to safeguarding lives while supporting urban growth.

By prioritizing workplace safety, Anambra State continues to build a healthier workforce, a stronger economy, and a more prosperous future for its people.

Safe workplaces not only prevent injuries and save lives but also promote productivity, confidence, and long term development.
